Pathology

In addition to “classic” necropsies with detailed patho-anatomical examination and reporting perfomed by our veterinarians, we also offer a so called “targeted sample-taking” regarding your request for further diagnostics.

Whole animals, body parts or organs should immediately shipped to the lab. Please cool or deep freeze samples.

Transport of diagnostic sample material

AniCon is registered for handling category 2 material according to  Reg (EC) No. 1069/2009:

registration no.: DE 03 453 0003 02.

Diagnostic material has to be shipped double-bagged and in new, securely sealed and leakproof vessels:

Receiving of sample material at AniCon

We receive your sample material from Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Please note that live animals are accepted from 08:00 am to 03:00 pm and only with your advance notice by telephone (phone +49 4473 9438 - 30).

Outside business hours we provide a small customer lab, equipped with fridges for placing your samples. If you prefer to initiate a bacteriological examination by yourself you might use the provided incubator and all necessary material.

If you would like to use the customer lab for the first time please do not hesitate to contact us.

In urgent cases and prior agreement necropsies and further diagnostics can also be performed on weekends.

You will receive the test reports immediately after performed analysis of your samples (generally 24 – 72 hrs)

via E-mail, postal service or fax. Our electronic data base system allows a prompt submission of partial reports.

Microbiology

We receive whole animals or carcasses as well as swabs, tissues or organs of diseased animals, fecal samples, sock swabs, superficial swabs, contact plates, dust samples, surrounding samples, eggs or milk.

Identification, characterisation and typing of isolated bacteria are done by their biochemical, serological and molecular properties and with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

Sensitivity testing of isolates is routinely performed.

If requested isolated pathogens can be cryopreserved.

Serology

ELISA, hemagglutination inhibition (HI) or rapid plate agglutination can provide information about immune status of the tested animal. Knowledge of the antibody status can serve to control of a performed vaccination, an assessment of the infectious state or to the determination of the best time point for vaccination (IBDV, Gumboro).

Virology

Detection of virus via culture is performed from swabs, tissue samples or organs in embryonated eggs or cell culture. The obtained isolates are further characterized by hemagglutination tests as well as by molecular tools. If requested isolated pathogens can be cryopreserved.

Molecular biology > PCR

Besides “classical” cultural and serological methods we provide a broad spectrum of molecular tests.

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a rapid (within hours) method to detect genetic material (DNA/RNA) of inactive or reproductive viruses and bacteria.

We routinely perform PCR testing (mostly real-time PCR) for diverse poultry relevant pathogens. We put emphasis in routine diagnostics to provide our customers as soon as possible with results.

A further purpose of our molecular diagnostic is characterisation of viral isolates. These isolates are analysed by various specific PCR methods [i. e. (real-time) (RT-) PCR] and sequencing. Knowledge of detected genes, e. g. surface determinants, toxin gens and other gene sequences, enables us to classify isolates to species, subtypes and potential virulence. These tests allow a targeted selection of a suitable vaccine and let estimate its efficacy.

Swine

Located in the center of European animal processing we offer all possibilities to diagnostically assist veterinarians and livestock owners in any case of health problems in their pig livestock.

In our veterinary diagnostic center in Hoeltinghausen we have all facilities for post-mortems as well as for sterile collection of sample material. Further analyses, for instance the propagation of viral and bacterial pathogens, serological or molecular testing and the analyses of sequences, are part of our spectrum of laboratory services.

Pathology

Post-mortems are an important part of our work, we are able to examine all sizes of swine from piglets to sows. Results of necroscopies and, if necessary, photos of altered  organs are digitally reported promptly.

Transport of diagnostic sample material

For longer-lasting transport or shipment the sample material should be transported under cooled conditions. Diagnostic material has to be shipped according to VO (EG) 1774/2002 double-bagged and in new, securely sealed and leakproof vessels:

Microbiology

AniCon’s diagnostic lab receives all kinds of samples like swabs, tissues or organs of diseased animals, fecal samples, sock swabs or contact plates.

We process the whole analysis spectrum of microbial pathogens relevant for swine.

Initially, the samples are cultivated. Resulting isolates are subsequently characterized by biochemical, serological and molecular tools and assigned to a species, serotype or genotype.

Sensitivity testing of isolates is routinely performed.

Besides conventional methods for pathogen differentiation we use modern technology like MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

If requested isolated pathogens can be cryopreserved.

Serology

We routinely apply a wide range of serological examinations, for especially ELISA. Serological test results provide information about immune status of the tested animal.

Knowledge of the antibody status can serve to proof the success of vaccinations or to assess the reactions to earlier infections.

Virology

Detection of virus via culture is performed from swabs, tissue samples or organs in cell culture. The obtained isolates are further characterized by hemagglutination tests as well as by molecular tools. If requested isolated pathogens can be cryopreserved.

This type of pathogen detection is especially interesting for rotaviruses or influenza viruses.

Molecular biology > PCR

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a rapid (within hours) method to detect genetic material (DNA/RNA) of inactive or reproductive viruses and bacteria.

We routinely perform PCR testing (mostly real-time PCR) for diverse swine relevant pathogens. We put emphasis in routine diagnostics to provide our customers as soon as possible with results.

These tests allow a targeted selection of a suitable vaccine and let estimate its efficacy.

Cattle

We offer practical and problem-oriented diagnostic examinations in any case of health problems in cattle.

To also combat complex health problems in cattle livestock we do not exclusively focus on serological methods and the analysis of swab samples. Very useful could be post-mortem examinations as well as the sterile collection of sample material. The pathogens obtained due to necropsies enable a high quality analysis and diagnosis. Molecular tests and sequence analyses complete the offered services. Due to internally developed test methods it is possible for us to adhere short processing times.

Quality Management & Consulting

We support your work for sustained and optimized health status of livestock.

Quality Management

All processes in our veterinary service lab are accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. The accredited activities cover the whole variety of veterinary diagnostic work, namely all aspects of necropsy and bacteriological, virological, parasitological, serological and biomolecular applications. Our status of accreditation certifies that all methods applied are defined and standardized in the framework of our quality management and documentation system. Also, our lab is continuously attending diverse ring trials, proficiency tests and interlaboratory comparisons; we also regularly initiate the latter on our own together with partner labs.

Consulting

Our service philosophy does not end with reporting of results of the finalized diagnostic work. We can provide individual help on interpretation of the results reported. We also appreciate to give you further personal advise beyond this interpretation of individual reports for any issue coming up, such as what additional diagnostics are available and make sense for your samples. Besides the typical diagnostic work for samples derived from acute, clinical relevant cases we also run routine diagnostic work for our customers and help them with planning, realization and documentation, e.g. for monitoring systems or clinical studies.
